Renovation

The original Oldner Barn had been converted from its original agricultural purpose sometime ago but had been neglected for a long time.

Fortunately our then neighbour had used its distressed look for a bit of art practice (her sketch is seen here).

There's also a picture of me and the foreman (our little dog Scally), during the renovation...mind you, I don't think he's impressed!

Following the renovation, we moved in while I built our new home next door.

History

History of Oldner

The hamlet of Oldner, just outside the historical market town of Chipping Norton where the source of the river Glyme can be found. This runs directly into Blenheim Palace grand lakes.

Locally, there is a neolithic stone circle, a Roman settlement and a Norman Motte-and-Bailey â€‹castle, clearly the area has been important for 1000's of years.

Also, within the boundary of our own home we have a small standing stone, a shepherd's hut (Oldner Bothy) as well as Oldner Barn.

Here are sketches (once again by our old neighbour) alongside a picture of the renovated Bothy - as seen today.

You'll see I moved the doorway to the south elevation, but tried to keep the general look of the original old building.

The Stone of Oldner

Oldner Bothy was likely used by drovers overnight bringing their sheep to market in Chipping Norton.

As they would have been able to keep them safe, with access to the source of the river Glyme and probaly grazing land where the crops now are.
